Trailing by 13 points with less than six minutes left in the game, Joel Osborn threw two long touchdown passes to Greg Applegate to put the Cyclones in front and Ben Arentson intercepted a pass to put the Mustangs on ice for a state championship. Osborn threw for 282 yards and rushed for two other scores as he broke the state record for passing in a season in the game. Applegate caught four passes for 169 yards and the two fourth quarter TDs, while Kevin Kruse rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown in the contest.
